Wild Stitch Studio is a North Hobart social enterprise and Tasmania's largest sewing school, running sewing classes, workshops and community programs.

Our Shop

Think natural fibres, deadstock treasures, and shelves stacked with fabrics and sewing treasures. We specialise in pre-loved textiles donated by our community: cottons, linens, corduroy and viscose, perfect for stitching up clothes or cosying into a quilt. There’s a whole wall of affordable and pre-loved remnants and fabric scraps (the good kind), plus locally made gifts, whimsical and vintage haberdashery, vintage bits, and sewing patterns you’ll want to take home just for the illustrations.

Our Classroom

Our sewing classes are more than just classes. They’re little gatherings of curious people learning, laughing, and sometimes unpicking. We offer daily kids and adults workshops, private group bookings, and a growing calendar of community art programs. The studio is held together by a small but mighty team; each bringing their own stitching style and spark. It’s an inclusive, positive space where all ideas are welcome.

Our Community

We believe sewing is more than making clothes; it’s therapy, connection, and creative rebellion all in one. In 2026, we’re proud to be working with some wonderful organisations including the Tasmanian Cancer Council, the Whittle Ward, Stitching and Beyond, The Tasmanian Fashion Festival, The Sakura Japanese Cultural Organisation, and the Tasmanian Quilt Guild.  Whether it’s stitching for comfort, for joy, or just for fun; we’re here for it.

Textile Reuse Program

 We have created a local resource recovery pathway for pre-loved textiles and haberdashery, diverting them from landfill via donations from our amazing community. We also teach sustainable sewing and upcycling, and build community connection through creative practice.

 Our program is grounded in the principles of the circular economy as defined by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation: eliminating waste and pollution, and circulating materials at their highest value.

 We have implemented a full manual textile and haberdashery sorting system at our premises. Every donated item is individually assessed for: suitability for reuse or recycling; fibre type (for example, cotton, linen and wool versus synthetic); heritage, designer or high-quality items; and removal of foreign materials. Items not suitable for resale are directed to other options such as the Resource Work Cooperative, community sewing programs, or recycling partners (for example, St Vincent's Industries, who recycle natural fibres into cleaning rags under a disability employment scheme) or, as a last resort, landfill.

 Following sorting, we process textiles and haberdashery into sale-ready formats; cutting, repacking, bundling, tagging and displaying as charm squares, fat quarters, bundles, scraps or rolls for resale. This lets us sell pre-loved textiles at accessible prices to schools, makers, and the broader community, increasing their appeal.

 Beyond diversion, we shift consumer behaviour through education to extend the life of textiles.

 We deliver accessible community workshops in upcycling, visible mending, invisible mending, and sustainable sewing, using our pre-loved textile resources whenever possible. We have previously taught for Hobart City Council, Libraries Tasmania, and Kingborough Council.
