KIDS TEXTILE SCULPTURE CLASS

We have run 3 Kids’ Textile Sculpture courses since 2022. The 8 week course was designed and led by local artist Kate Marshall and supported by Manager Briony Alderslade and other Frangipani staff.

This program for children aged 10-18 enabled them to become part of a supportive and close creative group, to explore working in 3 dimensions, and to discover their unique creative voice through textile art.

Each week students participated in fun activities that developed their creative thinking skills, and spent time working individually on their designs and then their final sculptures. Children aren’t often given permission to explore their ideas and passions. So, a key intention of the course was to give children creative agency and space to engage with the theme in a way that excited them.

Throughout the 3 sculpture courses since 2022 we saw an inspiring diversity and depth to the sculptures made by our students. Their works responded to the theme ‘home’ in 2022, and then ‘in my dreams’ in 2023. The 2022 students artworks were displayed in a public exhibition at the KIN Creative Space in Kingston. It was a fantastic display and an important celebration of their talent and achievements. In 2023 the sculptures from both years were included in the public Quilt exhibition by Island Quilts, at Craft Alive 2023.
