SOUND TO SCULPTURE — ABILITY TO CREATE

Sound 2 Sculpture was a collaboration between City of Hobart, artists Jon Smeathers and Kate Marshall, and Frangipani Fabrics.

In a one-off workshop, students aged 8 and up were guided through a process of brainstorming colours, textures, materials, shapes, and ideas in response to a sonic stimulus (a sound work created by Jon), to then craft a small soft sculpture. The sculptures were be displayed at the Ability to Create exhibition 2023.

The 3 hour workshop was designed to engage participants in a sensory art making experience. The theme of ABTC 2023 was ‘Elevate: rising above for a future Hobart’, so we challenged our students to make intergalactic/futuristic themed soft sculptures. It was an exciting collaboration that enabled a unique intersection of sound art and textile art.

The Ability to Create (ABTC) exhibition was born in 2013 when the City of Hobart was approached by Freddy Lee-Mount, a community member living with a disability. The Ability to Create exhibitions are a platform for enhancing a sense of place, nurturing creativity, celebrating artistic excellence and, most importantly, connecting creative people. Frangipani Fabrics was excited to be one of many organisations involved in this wonderful and growing event.
