Learn to design and print your own fabric with Tasmanian textile artist Till Julien. This is an exceptional opportunity for young artists to learn directly from a working professional and see what a career in textile art involves.

Over two sessions, Til will teach students how to take an idea from creative concept to finished print, using the elements and principles of design: colour, shape, form, and positive and negative space. Students will create their own design, cut a stencil, mix their own inks and hand print their motif onto fabric. Their printed pieces will then become part of their finished artworks.

Because the workshop runs over two sessions, students have time to reflect on their ideas and get their designs ready for printing day.

Day One: Design and Preparation

  • Meet your facilitator and see samples of textile artwork
  • Overview of what we’ll achieve over the two days
  • Demonstration of the printing process, from concept to finished print
  • Quick introduction to the principles of design: colour, shape, form, and positive and negative space
  • Develop your design concept for stencil printing
  • Cut your design into a stencil
  • Prepare your fabric
  • See different printing layouts: repeat pattern, overlay and offset printing
  • Mix printing inks and explore colour mixing
  • Ink up the printing plate and print your design onto fabric
  • Share your ideas and get help developing your design

Day Two: Printing Day

  • Finish cutting your stencils
  • Do a sample print to get used to the process
  • Explore colours and print layouts
  • Print your final artwork on your chosen fabric

What kids take away: hand-printed fabric made from their own design, ready to make into a bag, cushion, garment or artwork.
